Exam shape: the master mental model

This single model organizes everything you study. Hold it in your head and every other page slots into place.

Every producer exam = General portion + State portion

Section titled “Every producer exam = General portion + State portion”
PRODUCER LICENSING EXAM GENERAL / NATIONAL portion (insurance knowledge) - General insurance core - Property - Casualty - Life - Health (only the lines you sit) STATE portion (this state's laws/rules) - Licensing rules - Commissioner powers - Trade practices - Unfair claims practices - State-specific quirks (WA / CA / NY)
  • The General portion is essentially the same nationwide because the NAIC standardizes it. This is the durable content — sections 04–08 of this wiki. STABLE
  • The State portion is the laws and rules of one state (WA, CA, or NY). The concepts (unfair trade practices, commissioner powers, licensing rules) are portable; the specific numbers and citations are VERIFY — sections 09–11. STABLE
General/National portion 0. General Insurance core ← common to EVERY line (principles, contract law, agency law, policy anatomy) 1. Property 2. Casualty bundled as "P&C" ← Glacis-critical line is Casualty 3. Life 4. Health bundled as "L&H"

The General Insurance core (section 04) is cross-cutting — it shows up on every exam regardless of line. Master it first; it makes the line-specific material much easier. STABLE

For the Glacis play — a Tech E&O / professional-liability product — the relevant line is Casualty (E&O lives in Casualty / commercial lines). So the target is the Property & Casualty (P&C) track in the resident state first, then expand to other states by reciprocity. STABLE

See 03 Lines of authority for the full product→line mapping and 06 Casualty for the body of knowledge.
